In today’s world, there is scarcely a home or business anywhere that doesn’t rely on computers to some degree. However, this increasing dependence also requires systems that work properly when they’re needed. Most of us have experienced the frustration of a PC that isn’t performing as quickly and reliably as it should be. Here are some simple tricks you can use to boost your PC performance.

1. Keep your system clean

One of the best ways to boost your system’s performance is to get rid of all the junk on your hard drive. Over time this clutter can compromise the proper functioning of your machine. There are programs that can do this for you pretty quickly, but you should really do this regularly.

2. Avoid automatically starting programs

Programs can use up a great deal of RAM, which is your computer’s operating memory. Unless you use them all the time, there’s no sense in having them set to load at startup. That’s asking a lot of your computer and you can boost both its speed and performance by removing this burden.

3. Defragment frequently

Antivirus

The more programs and files you have on your hard drive, the more likely it is that Windows has stored different parts of these files in various different locations.

Depending on how much available space there is, it may do this with hundreds of them, meaning your computer will take longer to locate them when needed.

Defragment places that are all related to various information, which will result in faster operation.

4. Use reputable anti-virus software

Viruses are everywhere and if you spend lots of time online, you’re bound to pick one up. Always make sure you have a reliable and reputable anti-virus program installed on your computer and be sure to keep it updated.

5. Clean the registry

When your computer is new, the registry will contain only the information required for it to function. Over time it can add up hundreds of broken shortcuts, invalid paths, missing DLLs and invalid installer references. Cleaning the registry will clear away this clutter and reduce the occurrence of errors due to registry bloating.

6. Keep your machine cool

Always ensure that your computer is operating in a cool setting, with sufficient airflow around it. If you notice that it’s operating rather slowly, feel the case and see if it’s hotter than it normally is. Keep papers and other items on your desk away from your PC, so it won’t overheat and slow down.

7. Clear your browsing history

Your browsing history, temporary Internet files and cookies all take up disk space that will result in slower operation as they add up. Make a habit of clearing these out regularly.

8. Disable unused ports

If you have any unused USB or COM ports, disabling them will boost your boot speed. This can be done very quickly within the Device Manager.

9. Clean your desktop

SystemClean

Each time you boot your computer up, Windows designates a portion of its operating memory for each of the files located on the desktop, assuming that they need to be ready for instant use.

If this is not the case, they’re simply using up valuable memory for no purpose at all and this will slow your PC down.

Keep your files in the My Documents folder or in other separate folders to improve your computer’s response time and boost your PC performance.

10. Get rid of unused programs

When you install programs on your computer, connections are created between the program and your operating system.

Even the ones you actually use can slow your machine down, but if you’re not using them anymore, the best thing you can do is uninstall them to free up space and boost your system’s performance.
